Tokugawa Commodity Coins
These are just two examples of the wide variety of commodity coins used in the Tokugawa Period (1601-1868). Often different types of coins from Japanese trade partners would be repurposed in commodity trade. Since the Shogunate coinage was often unstable and sporadically used, foreign coins were widely excepted in Japan during this period. Their values were often determined by the coin's weight, and how it corresponded to the weight of Japanese coinage.
